Has there existed an author who personifies the essence of children’s books, reading, and the joy it brings more than Dr. Seuss? “The more that you read the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go!” Children and picture books have long gone hand in hand, their desire to explore the colorful pages, their inquisitive minds that learn by playing and imitating, and their inclination for repetition of their favorite books. It is no surprise that as the world leans further into the digital age, so do the world’s youngest quick studies. It is with sheer amazement that we often watch young children navigate and master the use of electronics, swiping away on tablets, smartphones, and e-readers alike.

The popularity of children’s picture e-books continues to rapidly increase as beloved brick and mortar bookstores permanently shut their doors and technological advances make books more accessible and convenient to transport than ever. Never before has even the most organized mother successfully fit ten children’s books in her purse or diaper bag. Thanks to the influx of touch screen electronics, with a fully charged battery, a child in a waiting room, car ride, or play area can have complete autonomy. Imagine the delight of an “I can do it myself” child being able to choose the book, determining when the page gets flipped and flipping back at will, and hold it themselves.

Along with the convenience and independence offered by picture ebooks come the dynamic graphics and vibrant colors that enhance the reading experience. Characters that were fun to look at on paper virtually come to life when viewed through the digital lens. The mobile technology offers young readers the chance to experience books and not just study pages. Ebooks are an interactive experience that allow little fingers to click on or touch characters and watch them move, listen to the noises animals make, repeat the sounds letters make, and even swipe or shake to add effects to the story.

Picture books for children will continue to fill shelves as there will remain an appeal for bound books, the comfort that cuddling with your child and reading a physical book brings, and the desire for young mind to explore their pages. Illustrators will draw with digital application in mind and put thought to sequences that transition seamlessly among print and screen. The future of picture books for children remains hopeful and the threat of bound book extinction remains invalid. Picture books for the youngest of readers who have yet to master the fine motor skills required for ebook reading are an example of ensuring that digital books will always be used in conjunction with print books and not in the place of.

Children’s picture ebooks are the new norm and in all likelihood, today’s young minds will be more accustomed to reading from a screen than from a paper page. The influx of ebooks available for children is indicative of the 21st century and the skill set needed to navigate it. Whether on paper or screen, the art of reading and the enjoyment derived from it will continue to cultivate young readers into young thinkers.
